Directional Drilling Auckland — No-Dig Water Mains, Gas, Drains & Ducting

Directional drilling in Auckland using our own Vermeer D10x15 drill. Response Plumbing installs water mains, gas pipes, drainage, power duct, and fibre conduit underground without digging up driveways, gardens, or footpaths. No-dig, no mess. Call 0800 877 586.

Directional drilling is a trenchless pipe installation method that bores a controlled path underground and pulls new pipe through behind the drill head — replacing water mains without excavation. Response Plumbing operates a Vermeer drill rig across Auckland, typically completing 100+ metre runs in a single day without cutting driveways or landscaping.

Most plumbers subcontract drilling to a third party and mark it up. We own our own drill, our team is fully trained in directional boring, and we handle the full job — drilling, pipe installation, connection, and testing. One team, one invoice, no middlemen. $0 call out fee.

Why Directional Drilling?

Directional Drilling vs Open Trenching — Why No-Dig Wins

Traditional trenching means digging up your property. Directional drilling means the pipe goes in without touching the surface.

No Damage to Driveways

We bore underneath concrete, asphalt, and paved driveways — no cutting, no reinstating, no ugly patch jobs. The driveway stays intact.

No Damage to Gardens & Landscaping

Mature trees, established gardens, retaining walls, and lawns all stay untouched. The drill goes under, not through. No excavation, no reinstatement.

Faster Than Trenching

A bore that would take days with a digger can often be completed in hours with directional drilling. Less time on site, less disruption to your property.

Often Cheaper Overall

When you factor in the cost of excavation, reinstatement, concrete cutting, asphalt patching, and garden restoration — directional drilling is often the more cost-effective option.

No Council Reinstatement Fees

Trenching across footpaths, berms, or council land means council reinstatement requirements and fees. Directional drilling avoids this entirely — no surface disruption means no reinstatement.

Minimal Mess

Two small entry and exit pits — that's it. No trenches across your property, no spoil piles, no trucks on your lawn. We clean up and you'd barely know we were there.

When to Choose No-Dig

When Is Directional Drilling the Best Option?

Not every job needs a drill — but these situations are where directional drilling saves you time, money, and damage.

Installing a Pipe Under a Driveway

The most common scenario. Instead of cutting and reinstating concrete or asphalt — which costs thousands and never looks right — we bore underneath. Driveway stays intact, pipe goes in, job done in hours.

Running Services Under a House

Need a water main, gas line, or drain running under a building? Open trenching isn't an option. Directional drilling bores underneath the structure without touching the foundations, floor, or subfloor.

Crossing Established Gardens & Landscaping

Mature trees, hedges, retaining walls, and established gardens that took years to grow. A trench would destroy them. Directional drilling goes underneath — zero surface damage, zero replanting.

Difficult Access Sites

Steep driveways, narrow side access, properties with retaining walls or fences between the street and house. Our Vermeer D10x15 is compact enough to fit through standard gates and tight residential sites where a digger can't go.

Avoiding Council Reinstatement

Trenching across footpaths, berms, or council land triggers reinstatement requirements and fees. Directional drilling avoids this completely — no surface disruption means no council reinstatement costs or delays.

Replacing a Failed Water Main or Drain

Old pipe leaking or collapsed? We drill a new path alongside the old one and install a fresh pipe — no need to excavate and remove the existing pipe. Faster and cheaper than dig-and-replace, with minimal disruption to your property.

On the Job

Real Directional Drilling Jobs Across Auckland

Our Vermeer D10x15 on real Auckland drilling jobs. This is what turns up when you call Response Plumbing.

Our Equipment

We Own Our Drill — Vermeer D10x15

Most plumbing companies subcontract directional drilling to a specialist — which means a second crew, a second schedule, and a markup on the price. We own and operate our own Vermeer D10x15 directional drill. That means one team, one schedule, and no middleman markup. When you call us for a drilling job, the same licensed plumbers who drill the bore also install the pipe, make the connections, and test the system.

The Vermeer D10x15 is a compact, powerful directional drill designed for residential and light commercial work. It handles pipe sizes from 15mm to 150mm across Auckland's typical ground conditions — clay, volcanic soil, sand, and mixed fill. It fits through standard gates and into tight residential sites where larger rigs can't go. Our team is fully trained in horizontal directional drilling — locating, boring, back-reaming, and pipe installation.

How It Works

Four Steps to a No-Dig Installation

From your call to a pipe in the ground — efficient and disruption-free.

1

Site Assessment

We visit the site, assess the bore path, locate existing underground services, and confirm ground conditions. We plan the drill path to avoid services, tree roots, and obstacles.

2

We Quote

You get a fixed-price quote covering the drilling, pipe supply, installation, connections, and testing. No surprises, no extras.

3

We Drill & Install

Our Vermeer D10x15 bores the pilot hole, we back-ream to the required diameter, and pull the pipe through. Two small pits at entry and exit — that's the only surface disruption.

4

Connected & Tested

We connect the new pipe to the existing system, pressure test, flush, and commission. Pits are backfilled and tidied. Job done — you'd barely know we were there.

Real Job — Recent Work

The Castor Bay 110m Water Main Replacement

Two leaks in a 30-year-old water main, a 110-metre concrete driveway, and how directional drilling replaced the entire line without breaking a single slab.

Directional Drilling + Water Main

A homeowner on Aberdeen Road in Castor Bay called us out about high water bills that wouldn't go away. Michael headed up to take a look. The property had a long driveway — 110 metres of concrete from the street boundary to the house — and the water main running underneath it had reached the end of its useful life. After a careful investigation, we located not one but two separate leaks in the main line, both buried under the concrete driveway.

The water main was more than 30 years old. We could have patched the two leaks individually, but with a pipe of that age it was only a matter of time before the next failure. We talked it through with the homeowner, who agreed: replacing the entire line now made far more sense than fixing one leak today and another in six months.

Here's where it gets interesting. The traditional approach to replacing 110 metres of buried water main under a concrete driveway is brutal — you'd have to saw-cut and excavate the entire length, replace the pipe, then re-concrete everything. That's days of work, tens of thousands in concrete repair alone, and a driveway that's never quite the same again. We took a completely different approach: directional drilling with our Vermeer drill rig.

Directional drilling works by boring a controlled path underground from one entry point to another, then pulling the new pipe through behind the drill head. We drilled a brand-new water main the entire 110 metres from the meter at the boundary all the way to the house — without cutting a single piece of concrete. The driveway stayed completely intact. The job was completed in a single day, the homeowner had a brand-new water main with decades of life ahead of it, and the property was left looking exactly as it did before we arrived. This is the kind of job where having the right specialist equipment saves the customer tens of thousands of dollars and weeks of disruption.

What We Use Directional Drilling For

Directional Drilling FAQs

Common Directional Drilling Questions

What is directional drilling?

Directional drilling — also called horizontal directional drilling (HDD) or no-dig boring — is a trenchless method of installing underground pipes and conduits without digging up the ground. A drill bores a pilot hole underground from one point to another, then pulls the pipe or conduit back through. No trenches, no excavation, no damage to driveways, gardens, paths, or landscaping.

How much does directional drilling cost in Auckland?

Directional drilling in Auckland typically costs between $150 and $300 per metre depending on the bore length, pipe diameter, ground conditions, depth, and accessibility. While the per-metre cost is higher than open trenching, total project costs are often significantly lower once you factor in the savings from not having to reinstate driveways, paths, lawns, gardens, and landscaping. We provide upfront fixed-price quotes — $0 call out fee.

What size pipes can you drill?

We drill water mains from 15mm to 100mm, drainage pipes from 50mm to 150mm, gas pipes, power duct, and fibre conduit. Our Vermeer D10x15 directional drill handles residential, commercial, and civil drilling across all common pipe sizes.

Is directional drilling better than trenching?

In most situations, yes. Directional drilling avoids digging up driveways, gardens, paths, roads, tree roots, and landscaping — there is minimal surface disruption, no reinstatement costs, and the job is typically faster. It is especially beneficial for longer pipe runs or installations under driveways, established gardens, or paved areas. Trenching is only better for very short runs in open ground with no surface to reinstate. We assess each job and recommend the right approach.

Can you drill under a driveway?

Yes. Drilling under driveways is one of the most common directional drilling jobs. Instead of cutting and reinstating concrete or asphalt — which is expensive and never looks the same — we bore underneath with zero surface damage. The pipe goes in, the driveway stays intact.

Do you drill for gas pipes?

Yes. We directional drill for gas pipe installation as part of our gas fitting services. As a Registered Certifying Gasfitter, we handle the full job — drilling, pipe installation, connection, pressure testing, and gas compliance certificate. No subcontracting.

Can you drill for electricians?

Yes. We drill power duct and fibre conduit for electricians and telecommunications contractors. We bore the path and install the duct — your electrician then pulls their cables through. Saves them hiring a drill and operator.

What drill do you use?

We own and operate a Vermeer D10x15 directional drill — a compact, powerful machine designed for residential and light commercial drilling. It handles bores from 15mm to 150mm across a wide range of ground conditions including clay, sand, and volcanic soil common across Auckland.

Can you drill for new water mains?

Yes. New water main installation is one of our most common directional drilling jobs. We drill from the street to your house, install the new water main, connect to the council toby, and pressure test. No trenching across your front yard, garden, or driveway.

What areas do you cover for directional drilling?

We cover all of greater Auckland — North Shore, West Auckland, Auckland Central, East Auckland and South Auckland. With plumbers across Auckland, most callouts are reached in under 30 minutes.

How deep can directional drilling go?

Our directional drilling equipment can install pipes at depths typically between 600mm and 3 metres below ground level. The depth is chosen based on existing services, ground conditions, and the purpose of the new pipe. We scan for existing underground services before drilling to avoid strikes.

What types of pipes can be installed with directional drilling?

We can install water mains (MDPE, PE100), sewer lines, stormwater pipes, gas lines, electrical conduits, and communication ducts using directional drilling. Pipe diameters from 25mm up to 250mm or more are possible depending on the job.

Does directional drilling damage my property?

No. Directional drilling only requires two small pits — one at each end of the pipe run — which are typically around 1 to 1.5 metres square. Everything between the two pits remains completely undisturbed. Driveways, lawns, gardens, trees, and paved areas stay intact.

How long does directional drilling take?

Most residential directional drilling jobs — such as a new water main from the street to the house — are completed in a single day. Longer runs or more complex installations may take 2 to 3 days. We provide an estimated timeframe as part of our quote.

Auckland's Own-Drill Plumber

Professional Directional Drilling in Auckland

Response Plumbing is one of the few Auckland plumbing companies that owns and operates its own directional drill. Our Vermeer D10x15 means we don't subcontract drilling to a third party — our fully trained team handles the boring, pipe installation, connections, and testing as one job. That means one crew on site, one schedule to coordinate, and one invoice at the end. No middlemen, no markups, no waiting for a drilling contractor to become available.

Directional drilling is the smartest way to install underground pipes in Auckland. Traditional open trenching means excavators on your property, trenches across your lawn, cut-and-patch driveways, damaged gardens, and weeks of disruption. With directional drilling, we bore the pipe path underground between two small pits — your driveway, garden, landscaping, and paths stay completely untouched. For many jobs, directional drilling is actually cheaper than trenching once you factor in the reinstatement costs that trenching creates.

We drill for all underground services — new water mains from 15mm to 100mm, gas pipes (with gas compliance certificate issued on completion), drainage from 50mm to 150mm, power duct for electricians, and fibre conduit for telecommunications. As a licensed plumber, Registered Certifying Gasfitter, and registered drainlayer, we can drill and install any underground service and sign it off ourselves. No separate trades needed.

We work across all of greater Auckland — residential, commercial, and civil projects. Whether it's a single water main under a driveway in Takapuna or a multi-service bore for a subdivision in Kumeu, we have the equipment and experience to get it done. Need an emergency plumber in Auckland? We're available 24/7. Every directional drilling job is backed by our 5-year workmanship warranty and $5 million public liability insurance.
