A frantic phone call. A burning gas hot water cylinder. And why faulty installation work nearly cost a homeowner their house.
The phone call came in from a distressed Mt Albert homeowner: her gas hot water cylinder was on fire. She was understandably terrified — a fire on a live gas appliance is one of the most dangerous plumbing emergencies you can have, and every minute it burns is another minute the situation can escalate.
We dispatched our certifying gasfitter Matthew straight to the property. The first priority on any gas fire is the same: isolate the gas supply immediately. Matthew shut off the gas at the meter the moment he arrived, stopping the fire from being fed and making the scene safe to investigate.
Once the cylinder was cool enough to inspect, the cause became clear: the gas control valve was the source of the fire. On closer examination, Matthew identified that the cylinder had been installed incorrectly by a previous tradesperson. The non-compliant installation had caused a gas leak directly at the control valve, which had eventually ignited. This is exactly why gas work in New Zealand must be carried out and certified by a registered gasfitter — the consequences of getting it wrong are catastrophic.
Matthew removed the non-compliant work, fitted a new gas control valve, brought the entire installation up to current code, tested everything thoroughly, and signed it off with a gas compliance certificate. Total time on site: 3 hours. The homeowner had hot water back the same day, and — far more importantly — a safe, certified gas installation. If she had waited even another 30 minutes to call, the outcome could have been very different. If you ever suspect a gas leak or see flames near a gas appliance, isolate the gas at the meter if you can do so safely, get out of the house, and call us immediately.
All gas fitting in New Zealand is legally regulated to protect public safety. Here are the key standards and requirements we comply with on every job.
Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006, all sanitary plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying work in New Zealand must be carried out by a person who is registered and licensed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). Unregistered persons performing this work are committing an offence. All Response Plumbing gasfitters are PGDB-registered certifying gasfitters.
The Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010 set the legal requirements for gas safety in New Zealand. This includes requirements for certification of gas work, pressure testing, appliance installation, and the issuing of Certificates of Compliance for gas installations. We comply with these regulations on every gas job.
AS/NZS 5601 is the joint Australian/New Zealand standard that governs the installation of gas systems, appliances, and pipework. It covers everything from pipe sizing and ventilation requirements to appliance clearances and safety devices. All our gas installations comply with the current edition of AS/NZS 5601.
The NZ Building Code includes Clause G11 (Gas as an energy source) and Clause G12 (Water supplies) which set out functional and performance requirements for gas and plumbing installations in buildings. All our work meets the current Building Code requirements and, where required, we arrange Building Consent applications and sign-offs.
Certifying gasfitters are legally authorised to issue Gas Safety Certificates under the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010. These certificates confirm the work has been completed to code and are required for insurance, property sales, and Building Consent sign-offs. All Response Plumbing gas work is certified and documented.
Gas fitting in Auckland typically ranges from $120 to $180 per hour plus parts and certification fees, with most jobs quoted as a fixed price. Common pricing: gas hob or cooktop connection from $250, gas hot water system install from $2,800 including the unit, gas compliance certificate from $200. Emergency or after-hours gas work carries higher rates. We always provide an upfront fixed-price quote before starting — $0 call out fee.
Yes. Under New Zealand law, a gas compliance certificate (Gas CoC) is required for any new gas installation, modification, or disconnection. Only a Certifying Gasfitter can issue a Gas CoC. Without one, your installation is not legally compliant and your insurance may not cover gas-related damage.
No. In New Zealand, gas fitting work must be carried out by a Registered or Certifying Gasfitter licensed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). Response Plumbing holds Certifying Gasfitter registration — meaning we can carry out all gas work and issue gas compliance certificates.
We install all types of gas appliances including gas hot water systems (continuous flow and storage), gas hobs and cooktops, gas ovens, gas fires and heaters, gas califonts, gas barbecue points, and commercial gas equipment. We work with all major brands including Rinnai, Rheem, Bosch, and Fisher & Paykel.
Yes. We handle full LPG to natural gas conversions including converting your appliances, running new gas pipework, removing LPG bottles, and connecting to the mains gas supply. Every conversion includes a gas compliance certificate.
Signs of a gas leak include a rotten egg or sulphur smell near gas appliances or pipework, a hissing sound near gas lines, dead vegetation near an underground gas line, or higher than normal gas bills. If you suspect a gas leak, ventilate the area immediately, do not use any electrical switches, and call us or your gas supplier urgently.
Yes. Gas leaks and gas safety issues are emergencies. We offer same-day and after-hours gas fitting for gas leaks, faulty gas appliances, and gas safety concerns across Auckland. Call 0800 877 586 any time.
We cover all of greater Auckland — North Shore, West Auckland, Auckland Central, East Auckland and South Auckland. With plumbers across Auckland, most callouts are reached in under 30 minutes.
Yes. We install gas bayonet points for barbecues, outdoor heaters, and gas fire pits. This includes running gas pipe from your meter to the desired location, fitting the bayonet outlet, pressure testing, and issuing a gas compliance certificate. Much more convenient and cheaper long-term than refilling LPG bottles.
A standard gas continuous flow hot water system installation takes around 4 to 6 hours including removing the old unit, mounting the new unit, connecting gas and water lines, flue installation, and testing. We handle the full install and issue the gas compliance certificate on completion.
Yes. Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006, all gas work in New Zealand must be carried out by a registered gasfitter. Using an unregistered person to perform gas work is illegal, voids your insurance, and creates serious safety risks. Always verify registration on the PGDB register.
A gas compliance certificate is a legal document issued by a certifying gasfitter confirming that gas work has been completed to current New Zealand standards and building code requirements. It's legally required for most gas installations, alterations, and some repairs. The certificate protects the homeowner and is required for insurance, property sales, and Building Consent sign-off.
Natural gas is delivered through underground pipelines and is available in most urban Auckland areas. LPG (bottled gas) is stored in cylinders and used where natural gas isn't available. Appliances are designed for one or the other and cannot be swapped without conversion. Gas fittings, pressure, and safety requirements differ between the two.
If you smell gas, immediately turn off the gas supply at the meter if you can do so safely, open windows and doors for ventilation, do not use any electrical switches, lighters, or phones inside the building, evacuate everyone from the property, and call us immediately from outside. Gas leaks are a serious fire and explosion risk.
Yes. Gas califonts and continuous flow hot water systems should be serviced every 2 years by a registered gasfitter. Servicing checks gas pressure, combustion, burner condition, flue integrity, and safety cutouts. Regular servicing extends the appliance's life, maintains efficiency, and is often required to keep the manufacturer's warranty valid.
Yes. We install, connect, and certify all gas cooktops, ovens, and ranges from major brands. This includes new installations, replacements, and conversions between natural gas and LPG. All installations are tested and come with a gas compliance certificate.
A straightforward appliance connection typically takes 1 to 2 hours. New gas installations including pipework runs can take 4 to 8 hours. Certification and testing add additional time. Complex commercial gas work may take multiple days. We provide realistic timeframes when quoting.
Yes. We provide a 5-year workmanship warranty on all gas fitting labour. Gas appliances and components are covered by the manufacturer's warranty, which typically ranges from 2 to 10 years depending on the product. We register warranties on your behalf where required.
