Water main leaks often go unnoticed until the bill arrives or the damage is visible. Here are the warning signs.
An unexplained increase in your water bill is the most common sign of a water main leak. Even a small leak can waste hundreds of litres per day — and Watercare will charge you for every drop.
Turn off every tap, appliance, and outlet in the house, then check your water meter. If the dial is still moving, water is flowing somewhere it shouldn't — usually the main.
If pressure has dropped at every tap and shower — not just one — the main may be leaking, partially blocked, or corroded internally. Common on old galvanised mains. Leak detection Auckland →
Unexplained wet areas, soft ground, or lush green patches in the front yard — especially between the toby and the house — often indicate a water main leak underground.
If water is surfacing through the driveway, path, or lawn, the main is leaking significantly. This is urgent — call us immediately to prevent further damage to your property.
Brown, orange, or rust-coloured water from your taps — especially after the water has been off — usually means an old galvanised main is corroding internally. The pipe is failing and needs upgrading to PE.
From emergency leak repairs to full new water main installations — we handle it all with our own drill and our own team.
We locate and repair water main leaks — whether it's a split pipe, failed joint, corroded section, or damage from ground movement. We use acoustic leak detection and pressure testing to pinpoint the exact location, then repair or replace the damaged section. Same-day service available.Leak detection Auckland →
Water main burst? We respond fast — isolate the supply at the toby, prevent further flooding, and repair or replace the damaged section. Burst mains are emergencies that cause rapid property damage. Call 0800 877 586 immediately.Emergency plumber Auckland →
New water main from the street to your house — we drill and install PE pipe from 15mm to 100mm, connect to the council toby, and pressure test. Most new mains installed by directional drilling with zero damage to your driveway, garden, or landscaping.
Old main leaking, corroded, or restricted? We replace the entire water main with new PE pipe — usually by directional drilling alongside the old pipe. The old main is abandoned in place, the new one takes over. Immediate improvement in water pressure and quality.
Old galvanised steel water mains corrode internally over time — leak detection can find hidden leaks before they cause damage. They — restricting flow, causing rust-coloured water, and developing pinhole leaks. We upgrade to modern PE (polyethylene) pipe which doesn't corrode, doesn't restrict flow, and lasts 50+ years. One of the best investments you can make in an older Auckland home.
Toby valve leaking, seized, or broken? The toby is your mains shut-off valve at the boundary — if it doesn't work, you can't isolate your water supply in an emergency. We repair or replace toby valves and toby boxes across Auckland.
New connections to the Watercare mains supply — we handle the application, installation, and connection. New builds, subdivisions, and properties converting from tank water to town supply. We manage the process from application through to final inspection and sign-off.
Need more water flow? Upgrading from a 15mm or 20mm main to a 25mm or larger supply increases flow rate and pressure throughout the house. Essential when adding bathrooms, upgrading to a continuous flow hot water system, or installing irrigation.

A repair is cheaper today — but sometimes replacement saves you money long-term.
The main is relatively new PE pipe with an isolated leak — from ground movement, accidental damage, or a single faulty joint.
The leak is in an accessible location that doesn't require major excavation.
The rest of the main is in good condition with no history of recurring leaks.
A targeted repair fixes the problem without the cost of a full replacement.
The main is old galvanised steel or copper — these materials corrode over time and develop multiple leak points. Fixing one section often leads to another leak nearby.
You're experiencing low water pressure, rusty water, or recurring leaks — the pipe is failing systemically, not in one spot.
The main is more than 30 years old — modern PE pipe lasts 50+ years and won't corrode.
We'll always recommend honestly — if a repair will hold, that's what we'll do. If the main is failing, we'll tell you and quote a replacement so you can make an informed decision.
From your call to water flowing — fast and straightforward.
Tell us what's happening — suspected leak, burst main, low pressure, or new installation. We'll ask a few questions and book you in.
We use acoustic detection, pressure testing, and visual inspection to find the problem. For new mains, we assess the bore path and locate existing underground services.
Repair, replacement, or new installation — we carry common fittings and pipe on the truck. New mains installed by directional drilling with our own Vermeer D10x15.
Every repair and installation is pressure tested, leak checked, and guaranteed. We clean up, restore your water supply, and check pressure at every tap.

Thanks Mike for coming out same day as my call after being mucked around by various other companies. Mike has a really high level of knowledge around a range of solutions for my water main issues, along with great awareness of what everything costs, which was the most reasonable I could find from a reputable company. Will use again for sure.
Brilliant service, broken water supply at the toby 2 days prior to Xmas break, 7.00pm. One call, all repaired by 9.30 am next morning. Mitch did a superb repair in extremely constricted space. Thanks
Awesome company to deal with. Amazingly professional and thorough. They were quick, polite and worked to a really high standard. I honestly can't recommend these people enough — their invoice also came with photos of the work they did in finding and fixing my leak in the mains water pipe in my front lawn. They also installed a regulator valve at my request because the pressure was 800Kpa when it should be 500Kpa so this should help with stopping further leaks. A++++++ (very happy customer)
A homeowner with mysteriously high water bills, a hidden leak under concrete, and acoustic detection that found it without digging up the whole driveway.
A Papakura homeowner called us out after noticing their water bills had been steadily climbing with no obvious explanation. No visible leaks inside the house, no damp patches on the walls, no soggy lawn — just a quietly growing bill that told them something was wrong somewhere they couldn't see. This is one of the most common (and frustrating) types of plumbing problems: a hidden leak that's bleeding water and money without leaving a trace.
Mitch arrived with our acoustic leak detection equipment. Rather than guessing or digging up large sections of the property, the equipment pinpoints the exact location of underground leaks by listening for the distinctive sound of water escaping from a pressurised pipe. Within a short time, Mitch had located the leak on the property's main water inlet line — buried under concrete near the front of the house.
With the leak precisely located, we cut a small section of concrete directly above it — only as much as we needed to access the pipe, no more. Once exposed, the cause was clear: a cracked fitting on the MDPE plastic water main. MDPE is generally a reliable, long-lasting pipe material, but the fittings can fail over time from ground movement or installation stress. We replaced the faulty fitting with a new compliant one, tested the connection, and let the homeowner know the immediate problem was fixed.
Before reinstating the concrete, Mitch ran a final check at the water meter to confirm there were no other hidden leaks anywhere on the property — a step too many plumbers skip. The meter was completely still, confirming a clean fix. We then re-concreted the cut section neatly and left the property tidy. The homeowner's next water bill should drop back to normal, and they now know exactly where any future issues might originate. Acoustic leak detection saves homeowners thousands compared to the old approach of digging up entire driveways looking for a leak.
Two leaks in a 30-year-old water main, a 110-metre concrete driveway, and how directional drilling replaced the entire line without breaking a single slab.
A homeowner on Aberdeen Road in Castor Bay called us out about high water bills that wouldn't go away. Michael headed up to take a look. The property had a long driveway — 110 metres of concrete from the street boundary to the house — and the water main running underneath it had reached the end of its useful life. After a careful investigation, we located not one but two separate leaks in the main line, both buried under the concrete driveway.
The water main was more than 30 years old. We could have patched the two leaks individually, but with a pipe of that age it was only a matter of time before the next failure. We talked it through with the homeowner, who agreed: replacing the entire line now made far more sense than fixing one leak today and another in six months.
Here's where it gets interesting. The traditional approach to replacing 110 metres of buried water main under a concrete driveway is brutal — you'd have to saw-cut and excavate the entire length, replace the pipe, then re-concrete everything. That's days of work, tens of thousands in concrete repair alone, and a driveway that's never quite the same again. We took a completely different approach: directional drilling with our Vermeer drill rig.
Directional drilling works by boring a controlled path underground from one entry point to another, then pulling the new pipe through behind the drill head. We drilled a brand-new water main the entire 110 metres from the meter at the boundary all the way to the house — without cutting a single piece of concrete. The driveway stayed completely intact. The job was completed in a single day, the homeowner had a brand-new water main with decades of life ahead of it, and the property was left looking exactly as it did before we arrived. This is the kind of job where having the right specialist equipment saves the customer tens of thousands of dollars and weeks of disruption.
Common signs include an unexplained increase in your water bill, a constantly running water meter when all taps are off, low water pressure throughout the house, wet or soggy patches in the front yard, water bubbling up through the ground, or the sound of running water when nothing is turned on. If you suspect a water main leak, call us — we can locate and repair it same-day.
Water main repair costs depend on the location and severity of the leak, the pipe material, depth, and access. A straightforward repair on an accessible section starts from around $350 to $600. If the main needs replacing entirely, costs depend on the length, whether directional drilling or trenching is required, and the pipe size. We provide an upfront fixed-price quote — $0 call out fee.
A new water main installation typically costs between $2,500 and $6,000 depending on the length of the run, pipe diameter, ground conditions, and whether directional drilling or open trenching is used. This includes the pipe, connection to the council toby, connection to the house, pressure testing, and commissioning. We own our own directional drill which keeps costs competitive.
If your water main is galvanised steel or copper and more than 30 years old, replacement with modern PE pipe is usually the better long-term option — old mains develop multiple leaks over time. If the main is relatively new PE pipe with an isolated leak, a repair is usually sufficient.
Yes. We own a Vermeer D10x15 directional drill and install most new water mains using no-dig directional drilling. The pipe is bored underground from the street to your house without trenching across your driveway, garden, or landscaping.
A toby valve is the mains water shut-off valve located at the boundary of your property, usually in a small box in the ground near the footpath. It controls the water supply from the council main to your house. If the toby is leaking, seized, or broken, we can repair or replace it.
Low water pressure throughout the house is often caused by a partially closed toby valve, a leaking water main, a corroded or restricted old galvanised pipe, a faulty pressure reducing valve, or low mains pressure from the council supply. We diagnose and fix water pressure issues across Auckland.
Yes. We install a new PE main — usually by directional drilling — and decommission the old galvanised pipe. The improvement in water pressure and quality is immediate. PE pipe doesn't corrode and lasts 50+ years.
Yes. We handle new connections to the Watercare mains supply including application, installation, and connection. We manage the process from application through to final inspection and sign-off.

The water main is the main water supply pipe that carries water from the council connection (usually at the street or boundary) to your house. It's typically 20 to 40mm diameter and is usually buried underground. Water mains are the responsibility of the homeowner from the toby (boundary valve) to the house.
Modern MDPE (medium density polyethylene) water mains typically last 50 to 100 years. Older copper or galvanised steel water mains installed pre-1980s often fail after 40 to 60 years due to corrosion. If your water main is over 30 years old and you're having repeated leaks, full replacement is often more economical than ongoing repairs.
Yes. Directional drilling allows us to install a new water main underground without excavating. We drill a controlled path from entry to exit point and pull the new pipe through. This saves tens of thousands of dollars in concrete repair compared to traditional trenching.
Water main replacement costs vary significantly based on length, access, and method. A short replacement (10-20m) may cost $2,500 to $5,000. Full replacement of a long driveway water main (50m+) typically ranges from $8,000 to $20,000. Directional drilling adds to the upfront cost but saves on concrete reinstatement.
In New Zealand, the property owner is responsible for the water main from the toby (boundary valve) to the house. Watercare owns and maintains the main from their connection to the toby. Leaks on your side of the toby are your responsibility to repair at your own cost.
Watercare is responsible for the water supply up to and including the toby at your property boundary. Beyond the toby (into your property), repairs and replacement are the homeowner's responsibility. If you suspect the leak is on Watercare's side of the toby, they'll come and inspect at no charge.
Response Plumbing is one of Auckland's most experienced plumbing companies for water main installation and water main repair. Whether you have a leaking water main that needs urgent repair, an old galvanised main that needs upgrading to PE, a burst main flooding your property, or you need a brand new water connection installed — we handle the full job from diagnosis to completion. Same-day water main repairs available across Auckland. Every job done by a PGDB-registered licensed plumber, pressure tested, and guaranteed.
Auckland has thousands of homes still running on original galvanised steel water mains from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. These mains corrode internally over decades, gradually restricting water flow, causing rust-coloured water, and developing pinhole leaks that waste thousands of litres. If your home has low water pressure, discoloured water, or an unexplained water bill increase — the main is usually the culprit. Upgrading to modern PE pipe is one of the best investments you can make in an older Auckland home — it lasts 50+ years, doesn't corrode, and delivers full water pressure from day one.
We own and operate a Vermeer D10x15 directional drill — which means most new water mains are installed by no-dig directional drilling rather than trenching. The pipe is bored underground from the street to your house without digging up your driveway, garden, or landscaping. Two small pits at entry and exit — that's the only surface disruption. For many jobs, directional drilling is actually cheaper than trenching once you factor in the cost of reinstating driveways and gardens.
We also handle water leak detection, hot water repairs, toby valve replacements, council water connections, and mains pressure issues. If you've noticed a drainage problem or need an emergency plumber in Auckland, we're available 24/7. Every water main repair and installation is backed by our 5-year workmanship warranty and $5 million public liability insurance. Call 0800 877 586 for a free quote.
