Most toilet problems come down to a few common causes — and most can be fixed same-day without replacing the whole toilet.
The most common toilet problem — and the most expensive to ignore. A running toilet is usually a faulty fill valve, worn flush valve seal, or waterlogged float. Water runs continuously into the bowl, wasting up to 60,000 litres per year. We carry replacement valves on the truck and fix most running toilets same-visit.
Water pooling around the base of the toilet usually means the wax ring or pan seal has failed. This is a health hazard — that water is sewage. The toilet needs lifting, the old seal removed, and a new seal fitted. Don't silicone over it — that just hides the problem. We fix toilet base leaks properly.
A toilet that blocks once is annoying. A toilet that blocks regularly is a sign of a bigger problem — partial drain obstruction, tree root intrusion, or a damaged pipe. We clear the immediate blockage and recommend a CCTV drain inspection to find the root cause.
If the toilet doesn't flush fully, fills slowly, or needs multiple flushes, the problem is usually a failing flush valve, blocked rim jets, a low water level in the cistern, or a partially blocked outlet. We diagnose which component is causing the issue and fix it.
A hissing cistern usually means the fill valve is failing or the water pressure is too high. Slow filling can be caused by a partially blocked fill valve, kinked supply line, or low mains pressure. We replace fill valves, inlet valves, and flexi hoses on all cistern types.
A toilet that rocks or moves when you sit on it has failed floor bolts, a deteriorated base seal, or floor damage underneath. Rocking breaks the seal and causes leaks — and can crack the pan. We re-seat the toilet, replace the bolts and seal, and check the floor for water damage.
We repair all types of toilets — close-coupled, back-to-wall, wall-hung, and in-wall concealed cistern. If it flushes, we fix it.
Fixes running toilets, hissing cisterns, and slow-filling toilets. We replace fill valves, inlet valves, and float mechanisms on all cistern types — Caroma, Duravit, Kohler, American Standard, and all other brands. Common parts carried on the truck.
Fixes toilets that won't stop running, weak flushes, and dual-flush buttons that don't work. We replace flush valve seals, outlet valves, and dual-flush mechanisms. Restores a full, clean flush every time.
Cracked cisterns, leaking cistern bolts, failed overflow tubes, and corroded internals. We repair cistern components or replace the full cistern if the body is cracked or beyond repair. We source replacement cisterns for Caroma, Duravit, Kohler, American Standard, and all other brands.
Got an in-wall concealed cistern that's running, leaking, or not flushing properly? We access, diagnose, and repair in-wall cisterns without ripping out your entire wall. Fill valve replacements, flush valve repairs, and dual-flush mechanism replacements on all in-wall cistern brands including Caroma, Duravit, Kohler, and American Standard.
Toilet leaking at the base? We lift the toilet, remove the old wax ring or pan connector, fit a new seal, re-seat the pan, and bolt it down properly. Includes checking the floor for water damage and testing for leaks.
We clear toilet blockages caused by foreign objects, excessive paper, wipes, and sanitary items. Plunger, toilet auger, or hydro jetting depending on the blockage. If it's a recurring issue, we'll inspect the drain line to find the cause.Drain unblocking Auckland →
Cracked, broken, or worn-out toilet seat? We supply and fit replacement seats including soft-close and quick-release models. We carry common sizes on the truck and can source specialty seats for less common toilet brands.

The toilet is less than 15 years old and the pan is in good condition — internal components like fill valves, flush valves, and seals are all replaceable.
The issue is a running toilet, drip, or slow fill — these are almost always a valve or seal problem, not a toilet problem.
The pan isn't cracked, doesn't rock, and is well-seated on the floor.
Replacement parts are still available for the brand and model.
Most toilet issues fall into this category. A repair is faster, cheaper, and extends the life of your toilet by years.
The pan is cracked — a cracked toilet pan is a safety hazard and cannot be repaired. It needs replacing.
The toilet rocks on the floor and the mounting points or floor beneath are damaged.
It's an old single-flush model using 11+ litres per flush — a modern dual-flush toilet will pay for itself in water savings.
Parts are no longer available — common with older imported or discontinued models.
We'll always be straight with you — if a $50 valve will fix it, that's what we'll recommend. We don't push replacements you don't need.

Pleasure dealing with everyone at Response Plumbing, the team did a great job looking after us. My wife was briefed over the phone by the team on what to do to stop the leak in the first instance. Matt came through on short notice the next morning, diagnosed the whereabouts of the leak, fixed it promptly & we were back up and running.
Friday morning when putting the rubbish bin out I discovered a lot of water flowing over part of the drive along with a squishy lawn. Phoned a few places and all were looking at something the following week. Phoned Response Plumbing and they said they could send someone to locate the fault later that morning. They phoned me back to say they would be there in 20 minutes. First guy located the leak and marked it saying a repair guy would be there a bit later. The 2nd guy arrived, dug down and found and fixed the leak. 3 hours from first phone call to fix! I have saved their number to my phone and will definitely recommend them and use again.
A constantly running modern toilet, an in-wall cistern, and a fix that included a free upgrade to prevent future failures.
A Parnell homeowner called us out for a problem that was driving them mad: their modern designer toilet was running continuously into the bowl after every flush. It wasn't just annoying — a constantly running toilet can waste hundreds of litres of water a day and add a noticeable amount to a quarterly water bill.
The complication was that this wasn't a standard toilet. It was a high-end installation with an in-wall cistern hidden inside the wall cavity, accessed only through a removable flush plate panel. In-wall cisterns look fantastic and save space, but they require a specific approach to repair — you can't just lift a lid like a traditional toilet. Mitch, the certifying plumber on the job, removed the flush plate carefully to gain access to the cistern mechanism inside the wall.
A quick diagnostic confirmed the issue: the inlet valve had failed and was no longer shutting off properly after the cistern had filled. We organised a replacement valve from Reece Plumbing, our trusted supplier, and fitted it the same visit. While Mitch had the cistern open, he also took the opportunity to replace the flush valve as a precautionary measure — these typically last around 10 years before they start to fail, and it makes far more sense to swap it now than have the customer call us back in a year for the same access work.
Total time on site: 1.5 hours. The toilet was tested, the flush plate refitted cleanly, and the bathroom left exactly as we found it. This is the kind of job where experience matters — knowing how to access an in-wall cistern without damaging tiles or panels, sourcing the right parts from a quality supplier the same day, and thinking ahead about what else might fail saves the homeowner a second callout down the line.
Toilet repairs in Auckland typically start from $150 to $300 for standard repairs like fill valve, flush valve, or flapper replacement. More complex repairs including cistern replacement or in-wall cistern work cost $300 to $500. Full toilet replacement with a new unit starts around $600 installed. We always provide an upfront fixed-price quote before starting — $0 call out fee.
A constantly running toilet is usually caused by a faulty fill valve, worn flush valve seal, or waterlogged float — the internal mechanism isn't sealing properly, so water keeps flowing into the cistern and out through the overflow. A running toilet can waste up to 200 litres of water per day. We carry replacement valves on the truck and fix most running toilets same-visit, typically in 30 to 60 minutes.
A standard toilet installation starts from around $350 for labour if you supply the toilet. If we supply and install, pricing depends on the toilet you choose. We install all types — close-coupled, back-to-wall, wall-hung, and concealed cistern toilets. Upfront quote before any work starts.
Yes. Toilets can leak from several places — the base (usually a failed wax ring or pan seal), the cistern (cracked cistern or failed inlet valve), the supply line (worn flexi hose or stop valve), or between the cistern and pan (failed cistern bolts or washers). We diagnose the source of the leak and fix it same-day.
If your toilet is less than 15 years old and the pan is in good condition, a repair is usually the best option. Fill valves, flush valves, and cistern components are all replaceable. If the pan is cracked, the toilet rocks on the floor, parts are no longer available, or the toilet is an older single-flush model using 11 litres per flush, replacing with a modern dual-flush toilet is more cost-effective and will save water long-term.
Yes. We unblock toilets caused by foreign objects, excessive toilet paper, sanitary items, baby wipes, and tree root intrusion in the drain line. We use plungers, augers, and hydro jetting depending on the blockage. If the blockage is further down the drain, we can CCTV inspect the line to find the cause.
Yes. We install wall-hung toilets with concealed cisterns including the mounting frame, concealed cistern, flush plate, and pan. Wall-hung toilets require a reinforced wall frame and in-wall plumbing — we handle the full installation including carpentry and tiling coordination if required.
Recurring toilet blockages usually indicate a deeper issue — a partial obstruction in the drain line, tree root intrusion, a damaged or collapsed pipe, inadequate pipe fall, or sometimes a toilet with a narrow trapway. A one-off plunge isn't the answer. We recommend a CCTV drain inspection to find the root cause, then a permanent fix based on what's found.
Yes. We supply and fit replacement toilet seats including soft-close seats and quick-release seats. If your seat is cracked, loose, or the hinges have broken, we can replace it same-visit. We carry common sizes on the truck.
We cover all of greater Auckland — North Shore, West Auckland, Auckland Central, East Auckland and South Auckland. With plumbers across Auckland, most callouts are reached in under 30 minutes.
Yes. We install and repair in-wall cisterns, concealed cisterns, and wall-hung toilets including Geberit, Caroma, and Grohe systems. In-wall cisterns require specialist knowledge to access and service through the flush plate. We carry the parts and experience to handle most in-wall brands.
Yes. A wobbly toilet usually means the wax seal under the toilet base has failed or the floor is damaged. This allows water and sewage to leak under the toilet, causing floor rot, mould, and smells. It's a relatively simple fix if caught early — replacing the wax seal and tightening the base.
A standard toilet installation takes 1 to 2 hours including removal of the old toilet, fitting the new unit, connecting water and waste, and testing. In-wall cisterns and wall-hung toilets take longer — typically 3 to 5 hours. We leave the bathroom fully functional and the work area clean.
Yes. We install and service bidet toilet seats, bidet units, and integrated smart toilets from brands like Toto, Coway, and Brondell. Bidet installation requires proper water connection and often electrical work for heated or electronic units. All work is completed to NZ plumbing standards.
No. A cracked toilet bowl cannot be safely repaired — the crack will inevitably spread and the toilet will eventually leak or fail. We recommend complete toilet replacement. We can supply and install a new toilet in the same visit in most cases.
Response Plumbing is one of Auckland's most trusted plumbing companies for toilet repair and toilet installation. Whether you have a toilet that won't stop running, a leak at the base, a cistern that needs new internals, a blocked toilet, or you want a brand new toilet installed — we handle the full job from diagnosis to completion. Toilet problems are one of the most urgent calls we get — and for good reason. A running toilet can waste over 60,000 litres of water per year, costing hundreds of dollars in water charges. A toilet leaking at the base is a sewage leak — a health hazard that damages your flooring and subfloor. A blocked toilet is an immediate sanitation issue, especially in a home with one bathroom. We respond fast, carry common parts on the truck, and fix most toilet problems in a single visit.
For new toilet installations, we fit all types — close-coupled, back-to-wall, wall-hung with concealed in-wall cisterns, and commercial toilet suites. We install and repair in-wall cistern systems from all major brands — Caroma, Duravit, Kohler, and American Standard — including frame mounting, cistern installation, flush plate fitting, and all plumbing connections. We're happy to install a toilet you've already purchased or recommend the right option for your bathroom. Upgrading from an old single-flush to a modern dual-flush? We handle the full swap and dispose of the old unit.
We also handle the problems that often come with toilet work — blocked drains downstream, water leaks under the floor, and damaged flooring around the toilet base. If your toilet problem turns out to be a bigger plumbing issue, we'll diagnose it and fix it properly. Need a tap repaired or a water filter installed while we're there? We can do both in one visit. Need an emergency plumber in Auckland? We're available 24/7. Every toilet repair and installation is backed by our 5-year workmanship warranty and $5 million public liability insurance.
