Most hot water problems can be diagnosed and repaired onsite in a single visit. Here are the faults we see every day.
The most common cause of no hot water in electric cylinders. Elements corrode over time and eventually fail. We carry replacement elements on board and can swap them same visit — usually takes about an hour.
Water too hot, too cold, or inconsistent? A faulty thermostat can't regulate temperature properly. We test, diagnose, and replace thermostats onsite. Common on cylinders over 8-10 years old.
Water pooling around the base of your cylinder, dripping from the pressure relief valve, or rusty water coming through taps. Some leaks can be repaired — but a leaking tank usually means it's time for a replacement.
Lukewarm water at all taps? Your tempering valve may have failed. This valve mixes cold water into the hot supply to prevent scalding. We test and replace them same visit.
Pilot light won't stay lit, burner not firing, error codes on your Rinnai or Rheem gas unit. Our certifying gas fitters diagnose and repair all gas hot water systems including continuous flow and stored gas cylinders.
Hot water doesn't last as long as it used to? Could be a failing element on a twin-element cylinder, sediment buildup reducing capacity, or your household has outgrown your current cylinder size.
We'll always give you honest advice — not just push for the most expensive option.
Your cylinder is under 10 years old. The fault is a single component — element, thermostat, tempering valve, or pressure relief valve. The tank itself isn't leaking. A repair will cost a fraction of replacement and give you years more life from your existing system.
Your cylinder is over 10-15 years old. The tank itself is leaking (not just a valve). You've had multiple repairs in recent years. You're running out of hot water regularly. A new cylinder with a 10-year warranty is the better long-term investment.
We supply and install Rheem, Thermann, and Rinnai hot water systems — fixed pricing, fully installed.

These guys are great they arrived bang on 9am to sort out a leaking hot water cylinder. Super efficient highly recommend. Will get them to come round again if I have any other plumbing issues.
Our family was very happy dealing with Mike, Mitch and Mathew. Everything has been fantastic; the quick response, honesty, professionalism, timing, setting the right expectations etc. Both Mitch and Mathew were lovely. Mum was very impressed with Mathew who replaced our cylinder. He found a gold bracelet and handed it back to mum, he also helped her put back a heavy bag. Both were clean, polite and professional. Def a 5* experience.
A frantic phone call. A burning gas hot water cylinder. And why faulty installation work nearly cost a homeowner their house.
The phone call came in from a distressed Mt Albert homeowner: her gas hot water cylinder was on fire. She was understandably terrified — a fire on a live gas appliance is one of the most dangerous plumbing emergencies you can have, and every minute it burns is another minute the situation can escalate.
We dispatched our certifying gasfitter Matthew straight to the property. The first priority on any gas fire is the same: isolate the gas supply immediately. Matthew shut off the gas at the meter the moment he arrived, stopping the fire from being fed and making the scene safe to investigate.
Once the cylinder was cool enough to inspect, the cause became clear: the gas control valve was the source of the fire. On closer examination, Matthew identified that the cylinder had been installed incorrectly by a previous tradesperson. The non-compliant installation had caused a gas leak directly at the control valve, which had eventually ignited. This is exactly why gas work in New Zealand must be carried out and certified by a registered gasfitter — the consequences of getting it wrong are catastrophic.
Matthew removed the non-compliant work, fitted a new gas control valve, brought the entire installation up to current code, tested everything thoroughly, and signed it off with a gas compliance certificate. Total time on site: 3 hours. The homeowner had hot water back the same day, and — far more importantly — a safe, certified gas installation. If she had waited even another 30 minutes to call, the outcome could have been very different. If you ever suspect a gas leak or see flames near a gas appliance, isolate the gas at the meter if you can do so safely, get out of the house, and call us immediately.
The most common causes are a failed heating element, a faulty thermostat, a tripped power supply, a leaking cylinder, or a failed tempering valve. We diagnose the issue onsite and can repair most faults same day.
Element replacements start from $322+GST, thermostat replacements from $289+GST, and tempering valve repairs from $469+GST. We provide an upfront quote before starting — $0 call out fee.
In most cases, yes. We carry common hot water parts on board including elements, thermostats, tempering valves, and pressure relief valves. Most repairs are completed same visit.
If your cylinder is under 10 years old and the fault is a single component (element, thermostat, valve), repair is usually the best option. If it's over 10-15 years old, leaking from the tank itself, or has had multiple repairs, replacement makes more financial sense long term. We always provide both options with honest pricing so you can make an informed decision.
Yes. Our certifying gas fitters repair and service all gas hot water systems including continuous flow units like Rinnai Infinity and stored gas cylinders like Rheem Stellar. We can also provide gas compliance certificates.
Usually a failing element (on electric systems) or a faulty thermostat. On twin-element cylinders, one element may have failed while the other still heats partially. On gas systems, it could be a burner issue or insufficient gas flow.
Yes — we're available 24/7 for emergency hot water repairs across Auckland. No hot water in winter with a young family? We treat it as urgent and can usually have it repaired same day or evening.
Water leaking from the bottom of a hot water cylinder almost always means the tank itself has rusted through and failed. This is not repairable — once the tank is compromised, replacement is the only option. Old cylinders (15+ years) commonly fail this way. Leaks from fittings or valves at the top can often be repaired.
Modern electric hot water systems typically last 10 to 15 years. Older copper cylinders often lasted 20 to 30 years but are no longer installed. Gas continuous flow systems last 15 to 20 years. Heat pump hot water systems last 10 to 15 years. Lifespan depends on water quality, temperature settings, and anode replacement.
The most common causes are a failed heating element, a tripped safety cutout, a failed thermostat, or a blown fuse on the power supply. In gas systems, a failed igniter, gas supply issue, or blocked flue can cause the same symptoms. We diagnose the cause onsite and can usually repair or replace the faulty part same day.
Yes, in extreme cases. Hot water tanks have a temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR) specifically to prevent explosions. If the TPR fails and pressure builds up, the cylinder can rupture catastrophically. This is why annual servicing and TPR testing is recommended, especially on older cylinders.
Signs include water leaking from the bottom, water discoloured or rusty, the cylinder is over 15 years old, repeated repairs in a short time, noticeable rust on the tank exterior, water not getting hot enough, or the cylinder can't keep up with household demand. A plumber can inspect and advise on repair vs replacement.
Heat pump hot water systems use 60 to 75% less electricity than conventional electric cylinders, typically saving $600 to $1000 per year on power bills for an average household. The upfront cost is higher but the payback period is usually 5 to 7 years. They're most efficient in warmer climates like Auckland.
A standard electric cylinder replacement starts from $1800 fully installed. Gas continuous flow systems start from $2500. Heat pump cylinders start from $4500. Prices depend on cylinder size, brand, location, and whether any pipework changes are needed. We provide upfront quotes before any work begins.
Yes. We install Ecosprings and other major heat pump hot water brands across Auckland. We handle the complete installation including removal of the old cylinder, installation of the new unit, any required pipework changes, electrical connection coordination, testing, and council compliance certification where required.
Rusty or brown hot water usually indicates the inside of your hot water tank is corroding. This is most common in older cylinders where the internal sacrificial anode has been consumed. Replacing the anode may extend the cylinder's life but if rust is already present, the tank is often near end-of-life and replacement should be considered.
A hot water system failure is one of those problems that can't wait — especially in winter with a family at home. Response Plumbing provides same-day hot water repairs across Auckland for all types of systems: electric mains pressure and low pressure cylinders, gas continuous flow units like Rinnai Infinity, stored gas cylinders like Rheem Stellar, and heat pump systems.
Our plumbers carry the most common hot water parts on every truck — elements, thermostats, tempering valves, pressure relief valves, and anode rods. That means most repairs are completed in a single visit without needing to order parts and come back another day. We diagnose the fault, give you an upfront quote, and fix it on the spot.
We also give honest advice on whether a repair is worthwhile or whether your money is better spent on a new cylinder. If your system is over 10-15 years old and showing multiple issues, we'll tell you — and we can supply and install a new Rheem, Thermann, or Rinnai system at a fixed fully-installed price. No surprises, no hidden costs.
